Fermenting Feed: A Healthier, Cheaper Alternative

Updated: Jan 5, 2023

Anyone who owns chickens knows they eat… a lot. Here’s something we’ve learned that’ll boost the health and immune system of your flock while LOWERING your feed bill up to 50%.

So what’s this magic called? Fermenting your feed.

Fermentation uses natural bacteria to break down food, which improves the enzymes and brings vitamins B, C, and K up. This makes the food easier to digest and bumps the protein content up. Basically meaning it’s healthier and your chickens will eat a lot less.

So. How do we do this? It’s simple: water, your current pellets, and scratch grains. Here's the step by step process.

Like I mentioned above, you're gonna need regular chicken pellets and scratch grains.

Step 1: Add 2 parts pellets and 1 part scratch grains to your 5 gallon bucket or storage bin. You should add a little more than you need to take so that you don't have to start the fermentation over everyday. Fermentation takes 1-2 days but if you just add to what's already fermented it goes a lot quicker.

Step 2: Add water. The water should always be above the feed so that it doesn't mold. You should also expect the feed to absorb water so pour extra.

Step 3: Mix the 2 feeds and the already fermented feed with a stick or your hands.

Step 4: scoop out with sieve the next day before you start adding again. (So you get only fermented feed.)

Step 5: Watch the difference!!
